The 2000 Slim Your Bin Roadshow: Smart Shopper campaign toured East Anglia to encourage the regions shoppers to cut down on the huge volume of plastic bags and packaging waste that ends up in their dustbins. More than 40 local councils joined forces with Anglia Television to spread the smart shopper message. The challenge was to get shoppers of all ages to see how and why smart shopping helps the environment and reduce waste that otherwise would go to landfill.
Why Smart Shopping?
Smart shopping is easy. It doesn't take any longer, and it will save you money. Every week supermarkets across the Anglia region hand out over 3 million plastic shopping bags. They end up adding to the huge pile of rubbish clogging up landfill sites. Taking simple steps to become a smart shopper can reduce the amount of waste we throw away.
The fun Smart shopping roadshows visited 14 shopping venues across the region, and recycling officers also supported in-store events in local supermarkets.
More than 50,000 Are You a Smart Shopper cloth bags containing leaflets and other smart shopping goodies were distributed in shopping venues throughout the region.
Thousands of consumers in the Anglia region are now carrying their shopping home the smart way.
The Slim Your Bin: Smart Shopper waste awareness campaign won the award for 'best partnership project for recycling' at the National Recycling Awards 2000.
The SLIM YOUR BIN campaign is a partnership between councils in the Anglia Region,
supported by Anglia Television and Viridor Waste management.
